National biosafety management of Living Modified Organisms(LMOs) for public health

In 2014, regulation changed significantly due to the revision of laws and notifications in Korea.
Amendments were the establishment of provisions to report or approve on production process facility of LMOs. Additionally provisions were made to establish institutional biosafety committees and designate an institutional biosafety officer for the setup and operation on research facilities above biosafety level 2.
Further, the definition and classification of LMOs for health and medical applications were reset according to the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS), which is separate from the Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW).
The Korea Centers for Disease Control and prevention (KCDC) adaptedfor commercialization for pubic health applications, which has been expanded and induced the formation of autonomous biosafety management capacities of research institutions to improve and respond proactively to the biosafety management of LMOs for health & medical applications that are diversified and subdivided.
