KUGH Biobank was selected as a Regional Biobank by the Ministry of Health and Welfare in 2011. Since 2002, the Korea University Department of Medicine Pathology Classroom has operated a biobank with the support of the Ministry of Education and Science Technology. The university stored human bioresources and trained biobank workers. In 2005, the Ministry of Health and Welfare granted the university’s request for an establishment of a gene bank. The human bioresources stored at the Biobank are currently distributed through a fair process to internal and external researchers.

Status of Human Bioresources

KUGH Biobank collects bioresources related to various cancers (thyroid, liver, lung, colon, etc.). It also collects blood specimens (cardiovascular, neural, ENT diseases, etc.). The Biobank possesses a number of bioresources, and strives to conduct quality control assessments each quarter to ensure the high quality of distributed bioresources.

Projects and Distribution Results

KUGH Biobank aims to construct a biobank that is a leader both domestically and overseas. Further, its mission is to contribute to the development of medical research and the health and medical industries in Korea. Accordingly, the Biobank performs comprehensive human bioresource collection that does not follow a particular research protocol while implementing forward-oriented human bioresource collections in accordance with researchers’ specific research protocols. In this way, the Biobank’s operating strategy is a “fit to purpose” implementation that responds actively to the demands of researchers. To this end, materials required by researchers in relation to particular studies are collected systematically, new technologies for the management of human bioresources are developed, and distribution of human bioresources is conducted through a fair process for any researcher requiring appropriate study materials. The aim of this open operating system is to fulfill the role of a public research infrastructure.
The KUGH Biobank was designated a Regional Biobank in 2011, and has recorded 52 cases of bioresources distribution.

Public Relations and Future Plans

The KUGH Biobank is continuously publicizing its services. The Biobank actively advertises its collection, with a brochure for human bioresource donors, a publicity video played within the hospital, and seminars and workshops hosted every year for researchers.
